Freeway Golf Course – Balwyn North, Victoria

PCD has been involved in minor redesign works for the City of Boroondara at the 18 hole Freeway Public Golf Course since 1998 but was honoured when appointed to redesign the Golf Course in response to the North East Link project (major new road link) which is designed through the golf course taking out four of the existing golf holes.

The planning process for the redesign was extensive and involved multiple workshops with the team at the City of Boroondara, existing users of the golf course and the NELP teams. The process also involved critical reviews of important vegetation, existing creek / river / billabongs, safety, golfer routing / movement options and maximization of the potential for the site which sits in a flood plain.

The preferred concept was approved by Council in late April 2021 and detail design completed thereafter with the successful construction tender being awarded in August for an early September start to construction works.

A key feature of the redeveloped site will be unique timber faced bunkers which reflect an approach taken with many traditional golf courses in the United Kingdom and Ireland but will be a first for Australia.

The upgraded golf course will be open for play again in late 2022.
